Guba. Konul Abdullayeva – APA. Azerbaijani Jews celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the New Year. APA’s north bureau reports that today is the first day of 5770 by Hebrew calendar.

The Mountain Jews living in Girmizi Gesebe in Guba also celebrate Rosh Hashanah. On the first day of the holiday they go to the synagogue, pray in the morning and evening for a successful New Year.

Head of Girmizi Gesebe Mountain Jews religious community Boris Simanduyev says that Rosh Hashanah calls people to refrain from sins and to pray.
“This observance is held within the first ten days of the New Year,” he said.

The observance connected with the arrival of the New Year ends in Girmizi Gesebe as a trumpet made from a ram’s horn is played. The last observance is called Yom Kippur – repentance. Fasting is observed on the tenth day. Following this, festivities begin. Animals are sacrificed for men, sweets are served. According to the traditions, apples and honey are eaten. They symbolize a sweet new year. Houses are cleaned.

It is important to celebrate the New Year in the Motherland. So, Guba Mountain Jews living abroad come to the Motherland. Guba Muslims and Mountain Jews invite each other to celebrate holy holidays of the two nations – Ramadan and Rosh Hashanah.
