It is determined as a result of scientific research,†department chief of State Committee for Religious Organizations Gunduz Ismayilov told APA while clarifying why Ramadan begins in Azerbaijan a day later than in other Muslim countries. He said scientists do research and Ramadan begins in line with Islamic calendar.
“Scientists did research in Azerbaijan and determined that the new moon will be viewed on August 22. So, Ramadan begins on August 22,†he said.
Ismayilov said there is nothing extraordinary that Ramadan begins a day later in some countries.
Member of Cadi Board of the Caucasian Muslims Office Haji Miraziz Seyidzadeh said Ramadan begins in Azerbaijan a day later because of the two-hour difference between Turkey and Azerbaijan.
“Therefore, the moon is viewed in Turkey a day earlier. Shamakhy observatory in Azerbaijan did scientific research, academicians came to the conclusion that the moon will be seen in Azerbaijan tomorrow. This causes difference,†he said.
Seyidzadeh said in most Muslim countries Ramadan will begin on August 22.
Akhund of “Ashurbey†mosque Haji Mirtahir said the moon should be seen for Ramadan to begin.
“Our Prophet told to begin fasting after seeing the moon. All scientists say the moon will be seen tomorrow. That’s why Ramadan will begin tomorrow. In Turkey Ramadan has begun today, as we have time difference,†he said.
Theologist Elshad Miri said it is not connected with any difference in faith.
“Turkey says that they determine when the moon will be viewed by technical equipment. Iran, Saudi Arabia and other countries say it is not right. Our Prophet has a hadith in connection with Ramadan, the moon should be seen with eyes. This is the difference. There is no other problem,†he said.
Elshad Miri said it is being discussed in Turkey and there is no unique position on the beginning of Ramadan.
