President’s aide: Azerbaijan pursues partnership policy based on balanced, mutually beneficial relations

Ali Hasanov, the president’s aide for public-political affairs, made the remarks Thursday during the press conference of the Presidential Administration and the Ministry of Youth and Sports on the First European Games with the participation of the local and foreign media representatives.

According to him, Azerbaijan was one of the 15 countries that gained independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. “We had three ways ahead – to continue the relations with post-Soviet countries, act within the Western, democratic development, EU principles and the European values and pursue an independent policy. Each ways seemed attractive in spite of disadvantages. Azerbaijan experienced civil unrest and chaos in the early 1990s. A constitution was adopted in 1995. The Azerbaijani president clearly stated that we were going on our way. Our policy is based on interests of the Azerbaijani people. Moreover, we have made some attractive proposals such as participating in the program of the European Neighbourhood Policy, joining to the Eurasian Economic Union, as well as getting involved in the Non-Aligned Movement. Azerbaijan is everywhere, where a policy is pursued in favor of its interests. Azerbaijan prefers mutual, beneficial, bilateral relations, criticizing collective liability and collective unity. Therefore, we build relationships with Iran, the US, Israel and Turkey. Any way, which is based on Azerbaijan’s interests but doesn’t cast a shadow over anyone’s interests, meets our interests and is a true policy in the region.”
