Disinformation is among the serious threats on the global agenda, said Ahmad Ismayilov, Executive Director of the Media Development Agency, at a conference on "Digitalization, Artificial Intelligence and Media Literacy", APA reports.

He said that the rich historical heritage of the national press requires greater responsibility in the modern era:

“The rapid expansion of the digital media environment, the fact that the efficiency of information often exceeds the criterion of accuracy, and the increased ability of social media platforms to influence public opinion turn information exchange into a process based on collective responsibility. In this context, protecting the accuracy, objectivity, and public benefit of information, regardless of its source, comes to the fore as a priority issue.

Against the backdrop of current global information threats and new realities, protecting the information environment of our country and ensuring citizens’ access to accurate, reliable, and objective information are of particular importance. The process of increasing the media literacy of the population by providing the society with information of public importance in a complete and responsible manner by media entities acts as a complementary and mutually reinforcing mechanism.

Especially at the current stage of rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies, protecting a healthy information environment, adhering to ethical norms, and promoting accurate information are of strategic importance. In this context, strengthening media literacy is not only the responsibility of professional journalists, but also of information should be considered as a responsibility of the broad audience that is also a consumer. The ability to think inquiringly, the habit of evaluating the source and purpose of information are among the main factors determining the sustainability of modern society.

Increasing media literacy in the fight against disinformation, which is among the serious threats on the global agenda, and implementing continuous and systematic educational activities related to the evaluation of media content have been identified as one of the priority directions in our country. The first legal definition of media literacy in the Law "On Media", which came into force in 2022, and the entrusting of the implementation of state measures in this area to the Media Development Agency are important institutional steps taken in this direction.
