Social media companies should open offices in the member countries of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), said Zarina Kalmuratova, a senior specialist at the Kyrgyz Ministry of Culture, Information and Youth’s Information Policy Department, at the Media Forum of the Organisation of Turkic States, APA reports.
“Improving media literacy is very important. Media literacy should not be limited only to the ability to distinguish disinformation from real information. What can be reported? What can be highlighted? These are the questions that should be considered. In Kyrgyzstan, there is a law on protection from fake information, and it has been in force for 3 years. When registered information agencies in our country spread disinformation against legal entities and damage their reputation, these agencies are punished. However, when such disinformation is spread through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, unfortunately, we are unable to take action against it. Therefore, I believe it would be good if social media companies open offices in OTS member countries,” the Kyrgyz expert stated.
