I welcome the steps taken towards the establishment of the Media Excellence Center within the D-8 framework, said Ezzat Ibrahim, editor of Egypt’s Al-Ahram Weekly & Al-Ahram Online portals, at the panel session dedicated to the topic “Responsible journalism and digital innovation” held as part of the D-8 Media Forum, APA reports.

He noted that this center could play a balancing role against the most traditional centers that control the world’s information flow:

“The main issue is that in the old media ecosystem, decision-making power is still concentrated in several centers, and these centers control the flow of information to the world. Cooperation between the traditional media structure controlled by the West and the artificial intelligence industry is strengthening, and this reinforces the existing information order. However, for now, there is no institutional framework or reliable mechanism capable of balancing this system.”

Ezzat Ibrahim noted that if the D-8 member countries fail to update their own information structures in a timely manner, they will become targets: “In that case, instead of managing the information environment ourselves, we may become the target of manipulation.”
