A new principle on artificial intelligence has been added to the ethical guidelines for Azerbaijani journalists, APA reports.
The new principle concerning artificial intelligence was adopted unanimously.
Deputy Chairman of the Press Council Mushfig Alasgarli stated that the ethical guidelines currently consist of five principles and that work is underway to develop a sixth principle concerning artificial intelligence. The new principle will establish rules for the use of artificial intelligence in the activities of media entities.
According to the principle, media organizations must adopt internal documents regulating the use of artificial intelligence systems in their editorial offices. These documents must clearly specify the purposes and limits of AI use, verification procedures, and editorial responsibility. Editorial offices must also create appropriate conditions for improving their employees' skills in using artificial intelligence.
It was noted that the use of artificial intelligence systems should not replace journalists' initiative and judgment, editorial independence, or human oversight. Materials prepared with the assistance of artificial intelligence must be verified by journalists before publication, and the accuracy of their content and facts, as well as the reliability of the sources used, must be confirmed. Responsibility for published materials must remain with journalists and editorial offices.
The new principle also places particular emphasis on transparency. Thus, it must be ensured that audiences correctly understand content created, modified, or significantly shaped by artificial intelligence. AI-generated photographs, audio, video, and other materials that could mislead audiences must be appropriately labeled, and information about their origin must be provided.
In addition, the use of artificial intelligence systems must comply with the principles of respect for copyright, the confidentiality of personal data and sources, human dignity, and non-discrimination.
