Chairman of the Azerbaijan Press Council Vugar Zifaroglu has commented on the violence committed against APA TV correspondent Sanan Bahramli, APA reports.
Vugar Zifaroglu described the physical assault, insults and obstruction of the professional activities of APA TV correspondent Sanan Bahramli while he was covering a fire at the site of a non-operational meat processing plant on Davud Aslan Street in Baku's Nizami district as unacceptable
The Press Council chairman said that collecting information of public importance at the scene of an incident and conveying it to society is a journalist's professional duty:
"The use of physical force, threats and insults against this activity constitutes an act directed not only against the rights of journalists but also against freedom of access to and dissemination of information as a whole.
No one has the right to violently interfere with a journalist's professional activities, insult them or damage their technical equipment. Safety and order at the scene of an incident must be ensured within the legal framework, while journalists' activities must not be unjustifiably restricted."
Vugar Zifaroglu expressed confidence that the incident would be thoroughly and objectively investigated by the relevant authorities, that the actions of the person who committed violence against the journalist would be legally assessed, and that measures would be taken in accordance with the requirements of the law.
It should be noted that APA TV employee Sanan Bahramli was subjected to violence yesterday while performing his professional duties. Heydar Sardarov, who introduced himself as a security guard at the plant where the fire occurred, physically injured Sanan Bahramli, insulted him and damaged the company's technical equipment.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has initiated a criminal case in connection with the incident, and Heydar Sardarov has been detained.
