Vusala Mahirgizi, member of the Board of the Press Council, Director General of APA Media Group and Honored Journalist, has been the next guest of the “Experience Speaks” project organized by the Student Trade Union Committee of the Faculty of Journalism at Baku State University, the BSU press service told APA.
Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Professor Vugar Aliyev, noted that a series of meetings with journalists who have a special place in the country’s media landscape has already become a tradition of the faculty.
He stated that APA Media Group serves as a school for dozens of journalists in Azerbaijan and highlighted to students the professional principles of its head, Vusala Mahirgizi, as a journalist, editor, and employer. He emphasized that such events play an invaluable role in guiding young journalists and shaping them as professional personnel: “At today’s meeting, we will also listen to years of experience.”
Chairman of the Student Trade Union Committee of the Faculty of Journalism and fourth-year student Nurlan Jabrailzade provided information about the project. He called on students to be active in the “Experience Speaks” project, which aims to create a unified platform where young journalists can closely familiarize themselves with the practical activities of professionals.
Speaking afterwards, Vusala Mahirgizi shared her professional experience with students. She stated that accuracy in news materials is more important than promptness and that a professional journalist or media organization builds and maintains its reputation through accurate information provided to readers: “The main job of a journalist is news. Being inside the event, inside the news, is their main experience. The greater this experience, the more valuable that journalist or media organization is for its audience. The advantage of a good journalist lies in their work, their writing, their promptness, and their accuracy. Even if these criteria are not always observed today, readers still turn to us—the accurate source—to verify the information they receive. This is what makes a journalist valuable.”
The Director General of APA Media Group emphasized that the media organization she leads is among the leading ones in the South Caucasus and noted that this success is based on experience, professionalism, and accuracy: “Today, APA Media Group includes various media outlets such as Azeri-Press Agency (APA) MMC, Lent.az, Vesti.az, APASport.az, Kulis.az, and APA TV. Our organization, which has achieved various firsts in its field, also consistently prioritizes the implementation of innovations. The APA Journalism School, established in 2024, also demonstrates a modern approach to professional training. Journalists and editors who were once part of our family are now heads of their own independent websites and agencies. All of this reflects our contribution to the country’s press.”
Vusala Mahirgizi also spoke about the importance of properly using the capabilities of the language in journalistic writing: “Because a journalist’s article, report, and interview are their work.”
At the end of the meeting, Vusala Mahirgizi answered students’ questions.
