Baku. Shahriyar Alizadeh – APA. A round table was held on closing of BBC Azerbaijani service. According to APA, media representatives and human rights defenders attended the event. Chairman of “Democratic Journalists League” Yadigar Mammadli said that the decision of stopping the radio’s broadcasting was wrong: “The financial problem was shown as a main argument of radio’s closing. BBC Azerbaijani service will broadcast its programs via internet now. This is a blow not only on journalism, but the whole society”.

Human rights defenders Saida Gocamnali, Saadat Bananyarli, Novella Jafarli and Mirvari Gahrmanali also called this step as negative. The human rights defenders said that the Azerbaijani citizens living in the regions have poor internet access and as a result of this they are listening to pro-Iranian radios.

Then the participants signed a statement in a protest against the radio’s closing and submitted it to the UK embassy in Azerbaijan.
