Azerbaijan Press Council addresses President Ilham Aliyev in connection with Media Ombudsmanâ€™s issue

The appeal reads that law on data mining is in the focus of attention of both local and international experts: â€œFor solution of duties coming from the law is considered to establish another organization â€“ Ombudsman on information issues. This issue was discussed on July 22, in the meeting with Council members during opening of new administrative building of the Council of Press. Along with the adoption of law on defamation for the purpose of protection of international image of Azerbaijanâ€™s media, issues on formation of Ombudsman Office on Information were submitted in the agenda as well. Your position in this situation caused high spirit in media communityâ€.

Moreover, the letter reads that separate functioning of Commissioner on information issues makes possible to achieve more effective results. The council considers significant apply of current practice in Azerbaijanâ€.

â€œWe ask you to show sensitive attitude toward this issue, develop todayâ€™s political pluralism in Azerbaijan, support establishment of independent information ombudsman for the purpose of keeping principles of freedom of press in the center of attention, prevent union of it with Commissioner for Human Rights. We are sure that our final position connected with it will always maintain the protection of media principlesâ€, reads the appeal.
