Baku – APA. The Dnipropetrovsk-based Pivdenne Design Bureau has submitted an application to enter its Zenit rocket in a tender conducted by Azerbaijan’s Communications Ministry to place the country’s first communications satellite, AzerSat 1, into orbit, APA reports quoting kyivpost.com web-page.

"We have submitted the documents for the participation in the tender at the end of last year," the press office of Pivdenne Design Bureau told Interfax-Ukraine.

The press office didn’t disclose the details and conditions of the tender.

According to some reports, Russia’s Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center with its Proton rocket and the European Space Agency (ESA) with its Ariane launcher are also competing to launch AzerSat 1.

The result of the tender may be announced in mid-February, and the launch of AzerSat is scheduled for June 2012.

AzerSat 1 will be Azerbaijan’s first satellite, built by Orbital Sciences Corporation (the United States). The construction of the satellite will cost $80-100 million.
