Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned of the threat of militants crossing from Afghanistan into Central Asia, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.
The Russian minister made the remarks at a CSTO, CIS and SCO conference on security in Central Asia and Afghanistan.
He said that strongholds of terrorists and extremists still remain in areas of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan bordering Afghanistan: “Members of those terrorist and extremist organizations are attempting to enter the countries of the region, including under the guise of refugees.”
Lavrov named Wilayat Khorasan, the regional branch of ISIS, as the main threat. According to assessments by the Russian Foreign Ministry and intelligence agencies, the group is seeking to destabilize Afghanistan and extend terrorist activity to Central Asia and Russia.
