Volvo releases photos of all-new S60 saloon - PHOTO
The new S60 will make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010, before going on sale in the summer. With this new saloon, Volvo is targeting BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 buyers.
New design theme
Volvo is also using the new S60 to show off its latest styling theme. This sees even more of a move away from the upright, boxy lines of previous models, towards a more organic, sculpted look. The production version of the S60 is a toned down version of the popular S60 concept car that’s been doing the rounds.
In line with the premium-sector rivals Volvo is aiming to compete with, the S60 will be offered as a four-door saloon. Volvo is also likely to produce a five-door estate version in time, too.
Eco-focused engines
Volvo has released no specific technical information, but the low bonnet line suggests a range of smaller economy-focused, downsized engines. These will include a 1.6-litre turbo petrol and the 1.6-litre turbodiesel already used in current Volvos.
There is also likely to be a 2.0-litre turbodiesel, while the firm’s famous compact five-cylinder engines are also likely to be installed. In time, insiders suggests we can expect a hybrid version, but we shouldn’t expect V6 or V8 performance alternatives.
Safety first
Active safety features will include a groundbreaking pedestrian detection device. A development of Volvo’s City Safe system, it will automatically brake the car to a complete stop if it detects pedestrians walking in the path of the car. However, it only operates in emergency situations, if the driver does not react in time.
Volvo S60 may beat rivals on price
Prices have not been indicated at this time, but we’d expect the Volvo S60 to cost less than a BMW 3 Series, and maybe less than an Audi A4, too.
