Our country has rich agricultural traditions, diverse natural landscapes, and a strong culture of agricultural production. Agriculture provides livelihoods for people in our regions and plays an important role in the development of communities, MP and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion Nigar Arpadarai said during her speech at an event dedicated to World Food Day, APA-Economics reports.
"At the same time, we face serious challenges, particularly water scarcity, land degradation, rising temperatures, and increasing pressure on agricultural productivity. Therefore, food security is not an abstract topic of global discussion for Azerbaijan. This issue is directly linked to the efficient use of water resources, the resilience of our farmers, the competitiveness of the agricultural sector, and the sustainable development of our regions," she noted.
"We must ask ourselves a practical question: How can we obtain more value from every drop of water, every hectare of land, and every unit of energy we use? Innovation is indispensable in this regard.
Within the framework of COP29 held in Baku, Azerbaijan contributed to bringing the international community together around stronger climate action and expanded climate financing. We also advanced initiatives that link ambitious climate goals with practical solutions."
According to her, this is also important in terms of food systems: "When food is wasted, we also waste the water, energy, land resources, labor, and investments used in its production. When organic waste decomposes in landfills, it can also release methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Therefore, reducing food waste is not only an environmental responsibility but also an economic opportunity and a contribution to food security."
