The court found Rafael Avagyan, a 22-year-old soldier, and his civilian friend David Barseghyan guilty of high treason and espionage, sentencing them to 11 and 10 years in prison respectively.

According to the indictment, a year ago they communicated through social networks with the Armenian named Samvel Azatyan introducing himself as a member of a charitable society living in Istanbul. He asked Avagyan to inform him about emergency events, situation, medical services and nutrition of soldiers in the army of the so-called regime established in the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and to send photos of Syrian Armenians settled in Zengilan region. Avagyan and Barseghyan received gifts and money for it.

Both men pleaded not guilty to the accusations and said they didn’t understand the essence of their action.
