An internationally wanted person has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates and extradited to Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Justice told APA.
It was noted that the ministry continues to carry out effective cooperation measures with relevant agencies of foreign countries regarding the arrest and return to Azerbaijan of persons who are internationally wanted and accused of committing crimes. On October 16, the National Central Bureau of Interpol in Azerbaijan facilitated the extradition of another individual wanted internationally, carried out by the Ministry.
Thus, Sergey Sergeev, a citizen of the Russian Federation, who, by forming an organized group with a number of individuals, was involved in the illegal transfer of large amounts of money (cryptocurrency) from Azerbaijan to foreign countries and from foreign countries to the Republic of Azerbaijan, and was accused of committing the criminal offenses of legalizing a large amount of property obtained by criminal means (Articles 193-1.3.1, 193-1.3.2 and 206-1.3 of the Criminal Code) as an organized group, was located in the United Arab Emirates and arrested.
Under the bilateral extradition agreement between Azerbaijan and the UAE, the Ministry of Justice, as the competent authority, submitted the relevant request and required documents to the UAE and conducted effective negotiations. As a result, an agreement was reached on the extradition of the individual to Azerbaijan. S. Sergeev was brought to the country and placed in the appropriate investigative detention facility of the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice, based on a court-imposed detention order.
The Ministry continues to take necessary measures in this area.
