An Azerbaijani citizen is being deported from Russia despite being married to a Russian woman, the local diaspora said, APA’s Moscow bureau reports.

In Ryazan, police banned the Azerbaijani citizen from entering Russia for 10 years on the basis of several administrative deportation decisions. The Azerbaijani citizen appealed the decision in a local court but lost the case.

The defense sought to have the deportation decision declared unlawful, arguing that he was married to a Russian woman, helped support his family, and was involved in raising her minor children.

Lawyers said the man planned to adopt his wife’s children and that the entry ban prevented this and violated his right to family life.

In court, a police representative said that marriage to a Russian citizen alone does not confirm strong ties with the country. He added that the man had not taken any steps to legalize his status for a long time, had come to Russia for temporary work, had no property there, and had not paid taxes.

As a result, the court upheld the entry ban and considered the arguments concerning his family circumstances insufficient. According to the court’s assessment, the intention to adopt his wife’s children did not constitute an exceptional circumstance supporting the view that the entry ban amounted to excessive interference in the man’s private and family life.
