The European Commission has expressed support for Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, known for his liberal and pro-European stance, amid the political crisis in the country.

European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath told the European publication POLITICO that the appointment of new judges to Poland's Constitutional Tribunal should fall within the powers of the Sejm, the country's lower house of parliament.

By doing so, Michael McGrath made it clear that Brussels does not support the Polish president's authority to appoint judges to the Constitutional Tribunal. The dispute over the appointment of judges is the main cause of the crisis in the country. Michael McGrath based his remarks on the position of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the opinion of the Council of Europe's Venice Commission.

The European Commission said in a carefully worded statement to POLITICO that it was monitoring the situation. The publication wrote that the statement effectively expressed support for Tusk.

It should be recalled that on October 30, when the crisis in Poland entered an acute phase, the European Commission refrained from commenting on the substance of developments in the country. The institution cited its established practice of not commenting on the internal political situation in European Union member states.

The political crisis in Poland emerged after the Tusk government decided to appoint Mateusz Berek as a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal. Protests have been held regularly outside the court building in recent weeks. Some opposition politicians have described the developments as an attempted coup d'état.
