Food trade should not be used globally as a tool of economic or political coercion. This was stated in a written statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio following the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Atlanta, APA reports.
"An increasingly common problem within the trading system is the weaponization of conventional food supply chains, whereby governments deliberately slow, suspend, or block food trade in order to exert coercive pressure on another sovereign state on an issue unrelated to the geopolitical conflict at hand. It is important that the global community reach a consensus that food and agricultural trade should not be used as a tool for economic or political pressure," the US top diplomat noted in his capacity as chair of the meeting.
According to him, G20 countries recognized the importance of food security, supply chains for critical minerals and freedom of navigation.
