The detention period of Azerbaijanis arrested in Yekaterinburg in June of this year has been extended, APA's Russia bureau reports.

The Verkh-Isetsky District Court of Yekaterinburg has decided to grant the investigation's request to extend the detention period of Ahliman Ganjiyev, Aziz Abasov, Shahin Lalayev, Akif, Ayaz, Bakir, Kamal, and Mazahir Safarov.

According to the investigation's version, the Azerbaijanis involved in several murders and assassination attempts committed in Yekaterinburg in 2001, 2010, and 2011 will remain in detention until December 29, 2025.

In June of this year, Russian law enforcement carried out an operation targeting Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg. During the operation, force was used, resulting in the deaths of two Azerbaijani brothers, Ziyaddin and Huseyn Safarov, from sustained injuries. Other members of the Safarov family were arrested by court decision and charged with crimes allegedly committed in 2001, 2010, and 2011.

Subsequently, Shahin Shikhlinski, head of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Yekaterinburg, and his son Mutvali Shikhlinski were also detained. Mutvali Shikhlinski is facing criminal charges for using force against a state official, while Shahin Shikhlinski is accused of attempted contract killing and using force against a state official.
