State Customs Committee release statistics of combating drug trafficking in 2007-2011

The State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan released statistics of combating drug trafficking in the past five years. 461 facts of drug trafficking were disclosed in that period. 1346 kg of drugs, including 924 kg 344 g of hashish, 203 kg 666 g heroin, 188 kg 469 g opium, 4 kg 747 g marihuana, 24 kg 400 g methamfetamin were confiscated and annihilated.

531 suspects in drug trafficking were detained. 70 of them were women. It creates serious concern that women and children are used in drug trafficking.

Mostly Azerbaijani and Iranian citizens were brought to responsibility for drug trafficking in 2007-2011. The citizens of Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Lithuania, Ukraine, Nigeria, Ghana and Cambodia were also among the detainees.

Discovered facts and the analysis of the operational information affirm that the drug smugglers attempted to carry drugs to China, Canada, Thailand, Malaysia, Greece, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy and the other countries using Iran-Azerbaijan-Russia route and Azerbaijan territory as well.

A few drug routes was discovered and prevented as a result of comprehensive operational search and investigative measures by customs officials in recent years. 6 transnational criminal groups which were organized by Pakistani and Nigerian drug dealers, engaged with smuggling drugs to Iran and Azerbaijan and the China and Italy were discovered. 55 kg strong effective narcotics were taken and 7 Pakistanis, 3 Uzbekistani, 1 Nigerian, 2 Azerbaijanis, 1 Lithuanian citizen were arrested.

Five facts was discovered on attempts of carrying strong effective psychotropic drug which bringing from Iran to Malaysia and Thailand by Azerbaijan and Iran’s citizens with air transport (Baku-Istanbul, Baku-Moscow route).

Azerbaijan’s drug condition complicates due to Afghanistan factor. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reports that 32 200 ton opium was planted in 727 000 ha areas of Afghanistan.
