Baku. Victoria Dementyeva – APA. Azerbaijan may play an important role in Iran’s issue, said faculty member at the University of Haifa in the School of Political Science, Dr. Brenda Shaffer at “Azerbaijan-US: Vision for the future” forum in Baku, APA reports. She said that one-third of Iran's population is Azerbaijanis and they are carefully observing the developments in the north. She noted that the Supreme Leader of Iran and a number of leading politicians are Azerbaijanis.
The expert said the U.S. needs a strategic ally in the region. She drew the participants' attention to the fact that the United States allocated funds to Nagorno-Karabakh over the last 20 years: “Not being so high, these funds are designated to the occupied territories. I have been there, almost no one lives there.”
Shaffer said the U.S. lawmakers should put an end to this practice.
