A 7.3-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, the US Geological Survey said, Sky News reports.

The earthquake was initially recorded with a magnitude of 7.4, but was later revised to 7.3.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). Shallower earthquakes generally cause stronger and more concentrated shaking and damage.

Such powerful earthquakes regularly trigger destructive secondary hazards such as tsunamis and landslides.

The US Geological Survey said a tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific closer to the earthquake.

It added that hazardous tsunami waves are possible along coastlines located within 300 kilometers of the earthquake's epicenter.
