Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said Azerbaijan has been one of the most active parties in coordinating and developing the North-South Transport Corridor from the very beginning, APA reports.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, Bayramov said strengthening transport and logistics connectivity among regional countries is of great importance.
“The North-South project, which connects our two major neighbors through the territory of Azerbaijan, is one of the key and priority areas for our country.
In this context, several years ago, specific issues concerning the Azerbaijani section were agreed upon with the Russian Federation on a bilateral basis. I can say that those agreements are being implemented on time and according to schedule.
At the current stage, it is planned to increase the volume of rail freight transported through the Azerbaijani section of the North-South route to 5 million tons by 2028. There are no problems in this regard,” the minister said.
According to him, this is a project being implemented in stages.
“Once the work being carried out in the territory of the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran is completed, Azerbaijan is ready to further expand the transport capacity passing through its territory if the need arises.
The railway terminal located in the Iranian city of Astara, built with Azerbaijani investments, is also of great importance within the framework of the route. Construction of the terminal has now been virtually completed.
Officially, the facility's level of readiness is estimated at 98 percent. However, in reality, construction work has been almost entirely completed, and only the final handover procedures with the Iranian side remain.”
