Iran has recently issued statements on reintegration and the annexation of Azerbaijan under Gulistan and Turkmenchay treaties. I am disappointed that the U.S. administration does not give a clear response to these threats,” expert of the U.S. Heritage Foundation Ariel Cohen said at Azerbaijan-US Forum in Baku, APA reports.
Cohen said all U.S. administrations supported the independence of post-Soviet countries, including Azerbaijan and noted that Russia has not accepted the independence of these countries and consider their natural resources its own: “The Cold War is over, but not everyone in Moscow is aware of it. I often hear them say ‘we won’t give you our oil!’ I want to respond them - Sorry, this oil is not yours anymore.”
The expert underlined the importance of stability in the South Caucasus for the development of democracy in the region, said the stability is very important for the US.
“Along with Iran, terrorism and Al-Qaeda also pose threat to Azerbaijan and the US should give support to Azerbaijan in this issue. Azerbaijan, the country with Muslim majority and respect for minorities, is also a model,” he said.
Ariel Cohen called on the US to enhance cooperation with Azerbaijan and repeal Section 907 and the Jackson–Vanik amendment.
