One of the rivers polluted by the waste dumped by Armenia into the Araz is the Okhchu River. Over 27 years, the impact of Armenia's ecological destructive activities is evident in the pollution of this river, said Amin Mammadov, co-founder of the "Environmental Protection" NGO Coalition, during a briefing, APA reports.
He stated that despite numerous calls, foreign companies operating in the mineral extraction sector in Armenia have not submitted reports regarding the pollution of water bodies: "This fact has also been protested by NGOs in Armenia. However, the government labels members of these organizations as 'enemies of the people'. We have issued several protest statements in this regard. We call on Armenia to conduct monitoring with the participation of international experts."
He also mentioned that the coalition he co-founded sent a protest letter to the opposing side regarding the environmental disaster in the Arazdeyen and the construction of a metallurgical plant: "Later, in 2023, our coalition was established. In the summer of 2024, under the leadership of Mugabil Bayramov, a map of the mineral resources in Armenia was prepared. This map was presented to international organizations at events in various countries. The Azerbaijan Cartographers Society continued work on this map. The map was presented in Azerbaijani, English, and Armenian languages. Recently, based on information from Iranian media, Iran's relevant health authority, without naming the country, reported cases of various gastrointestinal diseases among the population living near the Armenian border. One of the rivers where the Araz flows into is Okhchu River."
