Baku. Victoria Dementyeva – APA. Conference entitled “NATO’s role in framing the geopolitical situation in the South Caucasus and beyond” is being held in Baku. APA reports that the conference is organized by the Center for Strategic Studies under Azerbaijan’s President and the Romanian embassy serving as NATO Contact Point Embassy.
Delivering a keynote speech at the conference, Chief of the Department for Political Analysis and Information of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan Elnur Aslanov said that NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation has a rich history. He also said that following an active participation in the NATO missions in Kosovo, now the Azerbaijani peacekeepers are also actively participating in the NATO missions in Afghanistan.
Elnur Aslanov underlined the active development of interparliamentary relations between Azerbaijan and NATO. Noting the dynamic development of NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation this year, Aslanov said that our country is interested in developing cooperation with NATO towards the implementation of military reforms.
Touching on Nagorno Karabakh conflict Elnur Aslanov said the conflict has not been solved due to the unconstructive position of Armenia.
“Passive position of the world community creates obstacles for the resolution of the conflict. Protraction of Nagorno Karabakh conflict impedes the development of the region. The conflict, which plays the role of cancer in the region, hinders the regional development,” he said.
Romanian ambassador to Azerbaijan Daniel Ciobanu highly appreciated the cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO. Noting that Azerbaijan is an important transit country for NATO contingent in Afghanistan, Ambassador called on Azerbaijan to actively continue military-political reforms, bring this sphere to conformity with the international standards. Ambassador expressed his confidence that this cooperation will be further continued.
