“If they hope that Armenia will arm itself and take Karabakh back, they should not have such hopes; this will never happen”, Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation and leader of the faction of Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) said in an interview with Azerbaijani journalists, discussing Russia-Azerbaijan relations and the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, APA reports.
Russian politician also spoke about the prospects for a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the obstacles to its progress, and Russia’s role in the process. "First of all, the reference to Karabakh must be removed from the Armenian Constitution. There are other issues on the agenda as well. Sooner or later, a peace agreement will be signed. Of course, it would be better if it happens sooner. Therefore, we will do everything we can to make this happen in the near future. We must not delay this; we must move forward along the path of peaceful development for the benefit of the peoples of the South Caucasus."
In response to a question about the risk of destabilization in the region due to the militarization of Armenia by external players, Slutski asserted, “If they are hoping that Armenia will arm itself and reclaim Karabakh, they should not. This will never happen. Even if Armenia arms itself to the teeth, Azerbaijan is still stronger.
We must put an end to this confrontation not to fulfill our own ambitions, but to move forward along the path of peaceful development for the benefit of the people living in the South Caucasus."
