Emphasizing that he made his first official visit to Turkey after the re-election, Ilham Aliyev said it was indication of a high level of relationship between the two countries. He said Turkey-Azerbaijan relations had no analogue in the world and these relations had historical roots. President Aliyev said economic relations between the countries were gradually deepening and Azerbaijani businessmen began to put investments in Turkey as a result of Azerbaijan’s economic development. The Head of State gave the energy cooperation as an example and said Shahdeniz Project was carried out with the joint efforts and Azerbaijan entered into the Turkey’s market. “Earlier Azerbaijan imported the natural gas, but now it exports it”. Focusing on the historical, economic and political significance of the Kars-Tbilisi-Baku railway project the Azerbaijani leader reminded about his address to the Turkish Parliament in 2004 and said his words became realities in a short time.

Ilham Aliyev called the Turkey-Azerbaijan union an important factor in the region. “All of us take close interest in the developments in the Caucasus. Turkey provides very active policy on these issues and will seriously interfere in the regional problems in future. It will have positive results. We believe that Turkey’s initiative and sincere approach of the countries will bring peace to the region. We are living in very sensitive region. There is a ceasefire regime, but it does not mean peace and stability in the Caucasus”. Ilham Aliyev said the biggest problem for peace and stability in the region was the occupation of Azerbaijan’s Nagorno Karabakh Region by Armenia. “Armenia’s policy of occupation and ethnic cleansing against Azerbaijan resulted with the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani lands. Nearly one million Azerbaijanis turned into refuges and displaced persons in their homelands. Our territorial integrity has been violated. Armenia refuses to fulfill UN Security Council resolutions. Those resolutions consider liberation of Azerbaijani lands. We hope that Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity will be restored and the country will be saved from the occupation and ethnic cleansing. Armenia must show political will and fulfill resolutions of the international organizations for that”.
