Eric Cantona calls for cun on the banks
Cantona, 44, one of France’s wealthiest former sports stars, made his controversial comments in a filmed newspaper interview which has now been posted onto popular internet site YouTube.
Thousands of French protesters angry at their government’s pension reforms and austerity measures have already begun withdrawing cash, the French media said.
But his idea has been branded ’stupid in every sense’ and a charter for thieves and money-launderers by the French Banking Federation.
A spokeswoman said: ‘My first reaction is to laugh. It is totally idiotic.’
Cantona made the controversial comments after a French regional newspaper asked him about the recent wave of strikes in the country.
