Azerbaijan may unveil new energy storage approach by end of September

A conceptual approach to the implementation of energy storage systems in Azerbaijan may be presented by the end of September, Javid Abdullayev, Director of the State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources under the Ministry of Energy, stated during the opening ceremony of a modern renewable energy laboratory at Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU), APA-Economics reports.

According to him, work is currently underway on a regulatory framework for the integration of renewable energy sources into Azerbaijan's energy system and the implementation of energy storage systems.

“We are currently working on the regulatory framework. Several key ‘red lines’ and frameworks have been identified. One of China's leading research institutes is studying our grid to address these issues. They will share with us the preliminary results of their analysis on renewable energy,” Javid Abdullayev noted.

He added that there are currently two energy storage systems in the country, each with a capacity of 125 MW.

“Following the analysis, we will understand approximately what percentage of installed capacity should be supported by batteries depending on the volume of capacity to be installed. This is one aspect of the approach to the issue,” the Agency head emphasized.

Javid Abdullayev stated that it is not possible to integrate unlimited amounts of renewable energy capacity into the energy system and that a cautious approach is required in this regard: “There are several ways to address this. One, of course, is the use of battery storage systems. There are also different types of these. In addition to lithium batteries, we are already looking at other technologies.”

The Agency head also noted that the establishment of pumped hydro storage power plants is planned for the first time in Azerbaijan: “For the first time in Azerbaijan, we are also considering pumped hydro storage systems. Approximately 25% of Azerbaijan's water resources are formed in the territories liberated from occupation. Naturally, the well-founded use of this potential could create certain opportunities.”
