Global electricity generation is expected to increase from 31,345 TWh in 2024 to 57,556 TWh by 2050, representing an increase of approximately 83.6%, APA-Economics reports, citing data from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The largest increase in energy generation is expected to come from other renewable energy sources (mainly wind and solar power). Specifically, this figure is projected to rise from about 4,931 TWh in 2024 to approximately 26,013 TWh by 2050—an increase of around 21,082 TWh (more than a fivefold rise).

“This means that around 80% of the newly added global electricity generation is projected to come from renewable energy sources (mainly wind and solar),” the report notes.

However, all energy sources are important to meet growing electricity demand. The share of non-fossil (non-conventional – ed.) fuels in electricity generation is expected to increase from 42% to 67% between 2024 and 2050.
