As electricity demand continues to rise in Azerbaijan, the transformation and resilience of the power generation and transmission systems are becoming top priorities, said Samir Akhundov, Chairman of the Board of the Energy Regulatory Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (AERA), during his speech at the Baku Energy Forum, APA reports.

He noted that the current power generation capacity in Azerbaijan exceeds 8 GW, mostly produced by conventional gas-fired thermal power plants. However, in the coming years, more than 30% of the generation capacity is expected to come from renewable energy sources.

Samir Akhundov also stated that the country’s renewable energy potential is estimated at 135 GW onshore and 157 GW offshore.

He added that by 2027, 2 GW of renewable energy capacity will be integrated into the national grid.
