New Azerbaijan Party to appeal to CEC against Jamil Hasanli

Baku. Mubariz Aslanov – APA. New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) got the fact on flagrant violation of the Election Code by presidential candidate of the National Council Jamil Hasanli.

Deputy executive secretary of ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP), MP Siyavush Novruzov told APA that these facts were revealed as a result of monitoring conducted on September 11 in this regard.

Novruzov also responded to the accusations of opposition over YAP’s presidential candidate Ilham Aliyev’s starting election campaign ahead of time: “This accusation is completely groundless. Ilham Aliyev visits the regions at all times, issues orders, lays the foundation of new construction works and so on. Mr. President visited the regions last year and in the previous years, attended opening ceremonies and communicated with the local people. It is an integral part of his work, his regular activity and it isn’t related with the election campaign. We are visiting our people not only on the eve of elections, we are always with them.”

He accused them of starting election campaign ahead of time themselves and flagrantly violating the Election Code: “The opposition started advertising candidates of the National Council in the newspapers and on their websites before the beginning of the campaign that is banned by the Election Code. Article #75 of the Code envisages that election campaign begins 23 days prior to the election and finishes 24 hours prior to the voting. But opposition roughly violates it and they have launched a campaign before pre-election campaign. Just look at the results of our monitoring conducted on September 11: Azadliq and other newspapers issue a number of agitating headlines regarding National Council candidate Jamil Hasanli, who has not been registered yet. For example, let’s pay attention to reports of Azadliq newspaper dated September 11, 2013. Headline: “Azadliq staff helped Jamil Hasanli’s campaign”. Following this, “It is our duty to support his campaign not only by financial means, but also with all our opportunities”. The headlines of other report: “Support of famous lawyers to Jamil Hasanli!”, “Mohammad Hatami’s support to Jamil Hasanli!,” or “People needs a leader like Jamil Hasanli” or etc. These reports call on to entrust Jamil Hasanli. The newspaper has also posted Jamil Hasanli’s bank account for collecting donations. Moreover, “Yeni Musavat” newspaper also issued agitating reports on September 11. For example, “Ali Karimli called on to support Jamil Hasanli” or “Support of famous lawyers to Jamil Hasanli” and other. All this is a gross violation of the Electoral Code’s article #75 of and those persons should be punished according to the article# 39 of the Code of Administrative Offences.”

Novruzov noted that YAP will officially apply to the Central Election Commission in this regard: “Let CEC consider this issue and make a warning. But today, opposition parties, newspapers, candidates and members of the National Council are roughly violating the legislation.”
