Bokova won 31 from 58 votes defeating Egyptian minister of culture Farouk Hosny in a race for the post of UNESCO Director General, APA reports quoting BBC.

Bokova graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) in 1976. She started her diplomatic career at the Bulgarian foreign ministry in that year and led the ministry in 1996-1997.

Bokova is the first woman to lead UNESCO. She will replace incumbent Director General Koitiro Matsuura in this post on November 15.

UNESCO Director General is elected for four years and has a chance to be elected for two terms.
