US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have proposed that European Union representatives unfreeze part of Russia’s frozen assets to revive talks on settling the Ukraine conflict, the Financial Times reported, citing sources.
According to the newspaper, Witkoff and Kushner presented several options for unfreezing Russian assets during talks in Miami last week with representatives of Britain, France, Germany, NATO and the EU.
The proposals included establishing a new special financial instrument under Washington’s oversight. The idea was discussed as part of efforts to prepare a peace agreement, the FT reported.
Sources said European representatives rejected the plan. However, mechanisms for unfreezing the assets and spending the funds remain under discussion.
Washington also asked Kyiv to submit a plan detailing how it would spend all funds received from any source, according to the report.
The United States additionally proposed cooperation with the International Monetary Fund on reforms to combat corruption and ensure accountability in Ukraine.
