UNESCO Executive Board begins 182nd session in Paris

The Board will review over 60 items, including nomination of a candidate to the post of new UNESCO Director General, APA reports. UNESCO Director General Koitiro Matsuura was elected to this post for two terms. Ina Marčiulionytė (Lithuania), Mohammed Bedjaoui (Algeria), Irina Bokova (Bulgaria), Farouk Hosny (Egypt), Sospeter Mwijarubi Muhongo (United Republic of Tanzania), Alexander Yakovenko (Russian Federation), Ivonne Juez de A. Baki (Ecuador), Benita Ferrero-Waldner (Austria), Nouréini Tidjani-Serpos (Benin) were nominated for the post of UNESCO Director General.

The Executive Board will interview with each candidate beginning from September 15. Then Board members will elect the new Director General by secret ballot in their closed meeting. The winner will be approved by the General Conference in the post of Director General. UNESCO Executive Board’s 182nd session will last until September 23.
