Türkiye’s preparations for COP31 discussed at first strategic planning meeting in Istanbul

On February 11–12, the first strategic planning meeting on preparations for COP31 was held in Istanbul, Türkiye, with the participation of delegations from Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Australia, and the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told APA.

The Azerbaijani delegation at the meeting was led by Deputy Foreign Minister and COP29 Chief Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev.

In addition, at the opening of the event, the Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues and President of COP29, Mukhtar Babayev, participated and delivered remarks online.

During the meeting, discussions were held on Türkiye’s preparedness for the substantive and logistical organization of COP31, the cooperation mechanism between Türkiye as the COP31 host and Australia, which is responsible for the negotiation process of COP31, as well as an initial exchange of views on the relevant strategy to ensure the success of COP31.

At the same time, within the framework of the event, participants exchanged views on plans for the current year regarding the activities of the Troika (Azerbaijan, Brazil, and Türkiye) known as the “Belém 1.5 Mission,” established pursuant to a decision adopted at COP30.
