Regarding the promotion of renewable energies in Japan, national and local governments should strive to increase the share of electricity from renewable energy sources to at least 50% by 2030 and 100% by 2050, Juta Wada, a member of the Climate Change Committee of the Federation of Japan Bar Associations, said during his speech at the panel entitled "Beyond National Frameworks: Lawyers and Law Societies Raising Ambitions Through Legal Approaches" within COP29, APA reports.
He said that a declaration was adopted in this regard in 2024. According to the declaration, they must create or improve legal systems to promote photovoltaic energy production on building roofs and abandoned agricultural land.
Juta Wada also added that national and local governments, private companies and citizens should understand that the current global warming poses a threat to human rights and therefore act to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the realization of the "1.5°C target".
