The world is temporarily heading toward exceeding the 1.5°C temperature threshold, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a video message addressed to an international event dedicated to World Environment Day (WED), hosted by Azerbaijan, APA reports.

He stated that there must be a transition from conventional energy to renewable energy.

“Every increase in temperature causes greater damage, especially for the most vulnerable population groups. Our task is to make this as small, short-lived and safe as possible, while rapidly bringing temperatures back down. This means sharply reducing emissions and accelerating a phased and just transition from conventional energy to renewable energy sources. This is the only sustainable way to reduce costs and ensure genuine energy security. It also means reducing methane emissions, which is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to limit near-term warming,” the UN Secretary-General stressed.

Guterres noted that protecting forests, land, and seas, as well as supporting communities already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change, is also important: “At the same time, fulfilling climate finance commitments made to developing countries is of vital importance. This will help save lives, protect livelihoods, and make economies more resilient. This is the moment to act for our environment and our future,” he said.
