"A new climate-related law is being drafted in Azerbaijan, " stated Fuad Humbatov, a representative of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, during the panel session titled “National Joint Actions and International Cooperation” held as part of an international event dedicated to World Environment Day (WED), APA reports.

He noted that work is currently underway on issues related to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, as well as other areas of the Paris Agreement:

“We also plan to cooperate with regional countries – Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan – to develop standards for emission factors. Currently, both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan use standard emission factors for inventories. During our last meeting, we discussed this issue with our partners in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan and proposed implementing joint projects to improve our emission factors by bringing together academic institutions, universities, and other stakeholders.

"For example, there is an indicator in the oil and gas sector called the gas-oil ratio. During oil production, a certain amount of gas is also released. Therefore, it is important to accurately determine the gas-oil ratio in Azerbaijan’s oil and gas industry. For this reason, we must work closely not only with international partners but also with academic circles and universities within the country. All these issues will be reflected in the new Climate Law currently being prepared. This is a new framework law and will encompass a broad range of issues covering various sectors.”
