Baku-APA. A 46 year-old man from Jerusalem, who belongs to an anti-Zionist extremist orthodox sect, has been indicted for offering to serve as a spy for Iran, according to an Israeli court statement released on Thursday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The suspect, who remained unidentified, confessed to the crimes and gave his account of the events.
The defendant belongs to Neturei Karta, a sect of Jewish orthodoxy which opposes Zionism and calls for the dismantling of the State of Israel.
According to the indictment, in January, 2011, the suspect flew to Berlin in order to meet with Iranian contacts at the Iranian embassy there. He told the Iranians he didn't acknowledge the existence of Israel and offered himself as a spy for Iran.
The two parties agreed on establishing an initial contact by email, according to the indictment, the suspect then tried to contact the Iranians by phone.
He was apprehended last month. The suspect's lawyer told the Walla! website that although these are harsh accusations in reality his client didn't do anything.
"No harm was caused to the state or any other party. The indictment refers to events that took place over two years ago. We will study the evidence and deal with these serious accusations," he said.
