Eyüpsultan Mayor Mithat Bülent Özmen and 27 other people have been detained as part of an investigation into the Istanbul municipality, APA reports.
The investigation is being conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, and searches were also carried out at the Eyüpsultan Municipality service building.
According to reports citing judicial sources, detention orders were issued for 28 suspects over allegations including membership in a criminal organization, receiving bribes, giving bribes and bid rigging.
Mithat Bülent Özmen was elected mayor of Eyüpsultan in the 2024 local elections. The municipality’s official website lists him as the serving mayor.
A day earlier, 59 suspects, including Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Vahap Seçer, Yenişehir Mayor Abdullah Özyiğit and Mezitli Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer, were detained as part of a corruption investigation involving three municipalities.
