Oscars to introduce Best Stunt Design category in 2028

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a new Oscar category recognising achievement in stunt design, debuting at the 100th Academy Awards in 2028 for films released in 2027, APA reports citing the Business Standard.

The move follows years of advocacy by director David Leitch ('The Fall Guy') and stunt coordinator Chris O'Hara. The award honours the creative and technical contributions of stunt professionals.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang praised the art form's cinematic legacy. Leitch called the recognition "a long journey" and a tribute to generations of stunt performers. More than 100 stunt professionals are Academy members. The last new category for casting was added in 2024. Eligibility and voting rules for stunt design will be announced in 2027.
