The Washington administration believes that charging fees for the passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz by any state would be illegal, said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, APA reports.
"This is an international shipping lane. No country has the right to charge fees or tolls for transiting an international shipping lane. That's the rule of international law," he said, answering questions from reporters after arriving in Abu Dhabi. "That's true for any international shipping lane, and we expect it to be the same here," Rubio emphasized, referring to the possibility of Iran collecting tolls for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. "I don't think we need to convince anyone here of that. I think all countries in the region agree with us."
