U.S. President Donald Trump, in a post on his Truth Social account has said he no longer wants to be "friends" with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, APA reports.
Trump claimed that Meloni repeatedly asked to take a photograph with him during the G7 summit in France.
The U.S. president also suggested that the Italian prime minister's popularity was declining at home.
“Perhaps it is because she turned her back on the United States, which sincerely loves and protects Italy on the issue of preventing Iran from obtaining or developing nuclear weapons, and on NATO as well,” Trump wrote.
He further criticized Meloni for allegedly refusing to allow the United States to use Italian runways, saying the decision created significant logistical challenges despite Washington spending hundreds of billions of dollars annually to help defend Italy and other NATO allies.
“Now, after the United States’ military victory over Iran, she wants to make friends again to boost her numbers. No thanks!” Trump added.
The latest comments come after Trump claimed following the G7 summit in France that Meloni had “begged” him to take a picture with her.
“She begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted it very badly. I wouldn’t have done it, but I felt sorry for her. She’s probably happy that I even spoke to her because I’m under no obligation to talk to her,” Trump said.
Meloni responded by dismissing Trump’s claims as fabricated.
“Frankly, I am shocked. I do not know why the President of the United States treats his allies this way. This is not the first time,” the Italian leader said.
“Unfortunately, he does not show the same determination when dealing with the enemies of the West and the United States. He should remember one thing: Italy and I never beg,” Meloni added.
