Idea of nuclear war is unthinkable - Guterres

Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity must be respected within its internationally recognized borders in accordance with UN resolutions, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said this in his speech at the 11th Extraordinary Special Session of the General Assembly, APA reports.

He stressed that Russia has alarmed its nuclear forces and that the idea of nuclear war is unthinkable.

"We are facing a tragedy in Ukraine. This is a major regional crisis and could potentially have catastrophic consequences for all of us. Russia's nuclear forces have been put on high alert. This is a terrible development. The idea of nuclear war is simply unthinkable. "There is no justification for the use of nuclear weapons," Guterres said.

The Secretary-General said that he had held talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenkyy on Saturday and assured Zelenskyy that the UN would not leave the Ukrainian people alone.
