Baku-APA. Nigerian trade unions have called off a strike protesting the minimum wage across the oil-rich nation, APA reports quoting news.yahoo.com website.
Leaders with the Nigerian Labor Congress and the Trade Union Congress ended the strike Wednesday, one day into the planned three-day action. They say President Goodluck Jonathan made promises to raise the wage.
The minimum monthly wage in Nigeria is 7,500 naira — or $50. A proposal before the government calls for raising the minimum wage to 18,000 naira — or $120 — but officials have yet to act.
World Bank statistics suggest more than 80 percent of people in Africa’s most populous nation earn less than $2 a day. Many find employment through petty trading, farming and the odd jobs that fill the nation’s largely unregulated employment market.
