There are currently 3,500 refugees and asylum seekers coming from third countries to Azerbaijan”.
The statement was made by UNHCR's Baku Representative Dag Sigurdson during an event arranged by the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs and the Azerbaijan office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in connection with 20 June--World Refugee Day, APA reports.
Mr Sigurdson noted that ongoing events in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan suggest that the number of refugees coming from third countries will grow in Azerbaijan in near future: “I’d recommend that Azerbaijan make use of the skills and abilities of refugees and asylum seekers coming from third countries. It may be beneficial for the state as well. We hope Azerbaijan will improve its legislation at the highest level for asylum seekers”.
